Spring Duck Free Crochet Pattern

Hello, friends! I have a new Spring-time pattern for this playful duck for you today. I can’t think of a better Spring-time activity than splashing through the puddles in your rain boots!

The body of the ducky is crocheted all in once piece and because the yarn is a Super Bulky weight yarn, it works up very quickly. The legs, wings, bill, boots, and hat are crocheted separately.

This the second duck pattern I have designed. Check out this post for the other one! If you are looking for other cute birds to crochet, I also have a swan pattern, a baby swan pattern, a flamingo, a chicken, a song bird, and chicks!

Let’s get into it!

The Details

The finished measurements are approximately 27cm/10.5″ tall.

Notes:

  1. The duck is worked in separate pieces (body, wings, legs, bill, boots and hat), which are stitched together.
  2. All pieces except the wings are constructed in continuous rounds. The wings are worked in flat rows.
  3. The feet and bill are worked around a starting chain.
  4. Assembly is completed as you go.

Let’s get started! (Or Pin/Shop for later!)

Terms and Stitches:

Ch – Chain

MR – Magic Ring

Slst – Slip stitch

Sk – Skip a stitch

Sc – Single Crochet

Sc3tog – Single crochet 3 stitches together

Inc – Increase. Work a regular sc increase

Dec – Decrease. When working in the round, always use the invisible decrease method.

FLO – Front loops only

Invisible finish – after working the last st, cut yarn and pull through the loop. Thread tail onto a tapestry needle. Skip the st to the left of the yarn tail and insert tapestry needle into the next st from back to front, then insert needle down through centre of the last st of the round (the finishing st you just made). Pull tail until the stitch is the same size as the stitches on either side. Weave end.

Rnd 2: Sc 6, sc 1 in space between rows 15 and 16 of the body, sc 6 across unworked sts of row 15, sc 1 in space between rows (14 sts)

Rnd 15: *Sc 1, dec, repeat from * five more times (12 sts)

Rnd 16: Dec around (6 sts).

Tie off, leaving a long tail for closing. Top up stuffing. With a tapestry needle, weave the yarn tail through stitches of last round, down the centre and out a stitch in the side. Pull to close. Weave end.

If embroidering the eyes: using a length of black crochet thread and your tapestry needle, weave the thread through a stitch at the back of the head and out through the stitch where the first eye will be (the eyes should be around rows 9 and 10 of the head with about 10 sts between them). Weave the thread around the stitch then through the head and out and around the stitch where the other eye will be on the other side of the head. Then weave the end back out through the same stitch in the back of the head. Pull the ends to create indents where the eyes will go. Using a new length of black crochet thread, weave the thread around the stitches above and below the indent several times to create a black oval shape. Repeat on other side. Using white thread, weave around the same stitches a couple of times behind each black oval. Using white, make a small stitch in the upper middle of the black oval to create the pupil. Repeat on other side. Tie off and weave ends. Set aside.

Wings (make 2):

Row 1: With yellow and 6.0mm hook, ch 4, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch (3 sts), ch 1, turn.

Weave ends. Stitch a wing onto each side of the body between rows 8 and 16 of the body. Angle the tip of each wing slightly downward toward the tail.

Bill (make 1):

Rnd 1: With orange and a 2.75mm hook, ch 10, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 8, work 4 sc in last ch, continue working on opposite side of ch, sc 7, work 2sc in last ch (21 sts)

Fold row 12 together and slst the ends. Tie off.

Rnd 13: Join yarn in any stitch of the ankle opening and work 8 sc evenly around (8 sts)

Do not stuff the foot. Stuff the leg as you go.

Rnds 14-27: Sc in each st around (8 sts).

Tie off, leaving a long tail for stitching. Using the remainder of your chenille stem, cut stem in half. Fold each piece in half to create two “V” shapes. Insert one end into each leg and the other end into the body to provide stability to the legs. Stitch the legs onto the bottom of the body at rounds 11 and 12 with about 3 or 4 sts between them.
