The Salem Sisters: Mary Sanderson Free Crochet Pattern

This is post one of three of my Salem Sisters series! This post contains the pattern for Mary Sanderson. The patterns for Winifred and Sarah can be found in separate posts.

The Details

The body, head, arms, skirt, and hair cap are worked in continuous rounds. The hair cap incorporates colour-work. When changing colours, insert your hook into the last st of Colour X and pull up a loop, then join Colour Y and finish the last st of Colour X using the new colour by pulling Colour Y through both loops on hook. Continue with Colour Y.

To indicate colour changes, the rounds will use the colour abbreviation instead of the stitch abbreviation. For example, “B1, P2, B3” means to work one sc in black, two sc in purple and 3 sc in black. “Binc” means to work a sc increase in black.

The remainder of Mary’s clothes (bodice, apron, and vest) are worked in flat rows.

The body is worked from the bottom up, starting with the feet. The head is worked top down. The head and arms are worked separately and attached to the body. Chenille stems (pipe cleaners/wire) are used to stabilize the neck and head and to make the arms posable.

The finished measurements are approximately 25cm/10″ from top to bottom.

Let’s get started! (Or Pin/Shop for later!)

These are the materials for Mary only. The patterns and materials for Winifred and Sarah will be in separate posts for each. (Affiliate links coming at you!)

  • 2.25mm hook (I use THESE hooks!);
  • Hobbii Rainbow 8/4 Cotton in the following colours:
    • Color 03 (skin)
    • Color 09 (black)
    • Color 37 (purple)
    • Color 60 (burgundy)
    • Color 66 (orange)
    • Color 36 (dusty purple)
    • Color 07 (brown)
    • Color 89 (cream)
  • 4 Chenille stems/pipecleaners;
  • 4 jump rings, 4mm;
  • White embroidery thread;
  • Red embroidery thread;
  • 9mm safety eyes
  • Black crochet thread, size 5;
  • Stitch markers;
  • Stuffing;
  • Tapestry needle.

Rainbow 8/4 Cotton is a Super Fine (category 1) weight yarn, so it is quite small. You can use any weight yarn you wish, simply size up to a corresponding hook size. Rainbow 8/6 or 8/8 would be a great as well; your doll will just be bigger!
