I’m back again with some seasonal pillow patterns! This time for spooky season! You may recall the other seasonal pillow patterns I’ve released: the FALALA Pillow, the MERRY Pillow, and the VALENTINE pillow. I am still on a tapestry/intarsia crochet kick so I thought, why not make more festive designs but for Halloween? I am also releasing the SPOOKY Pillow Pattern as a companion pattern to this one!
This throw pillow is made up of two panels but you have lots of options: you can do the background in any colour you want: white, black, purple, etc. You can make the back panel in a matching or different colour, or you could spice it up by making two BOO panels, or by using the SPOOKY companion pattern, and making it reversible.
This pattern includes both the chart and the written instructions. Check out this tutorial for details on how to make smooth colour changes around curved edges.
For this pattern, I decided to do a lace spiderweb-like border, rather than a pompom border, but, of course, the border is completely optional and you can choose whatever border you prefer! For example, a crab stitch border would be great too. Or keep it simple with the classic single crochet border. Check out the video tutorial for the spiderweb border here.
The Details
The gauge for this panel is: 10cm/4″ x 10cm/4″ = 21 sts x 24 rows
This results in finished measurements of approximately 30cm/12″ in height and 60cm/24″ in length. It is designed to fit a 12×24″ pillow insert but you can also use regular stuffing instead.
Notes:
- The chart shows the work as viewed from the right side (RS).
- The chart includes both colours and symbols (in case you don’t have access to a colour printer).
- Each square represents one single crochet stitch.
- The row numbers are listed on each side. Odd-numbered rows are worked right to left, with the RS of the panel facing. Even-numbered rows are worked left to right, with the WS of the panel facing.
- The pattern can be worked with the intarsia crochet technique, the tapestry crochet technique or a combination of both:
- Intarsia: a colourwork method used for blocks of colour whereby bobbins of yarn are used for each block of colour. The yarn bobbin is dropped and picked up as needed.
- Tapestry: a colourwork method in which two or more yarn colours are worked across the same row, with the unused colours carried on the WS as a float.
- When switching to a new colour, insert hook into the stitch for the last stitch of the first colour and pull up a loop, then, with the new colour, yarn over and complete the stitch by pulling through both loops with the new colour.
- For a tutorial on how to change colours around curved edges, please check out this video.
- Ch 1 at the end of each row. The ch 1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.
Let’s get started! (Or Pin/Shop for later!)

If you’d prefer a downloadable or printable version of this pattern, an inexpensive, formatted, and ad-free PDF can be purchased the following ways:

The Stitch Chart comes on two pages. You will need to print these out, cut the charts out, and tape them together. Use a pencil or highlighter to mark which row you are on as you go.
Continue below if you’d prefer to use the written instructions instead of the pattern chart linked above.

Tie off. Weave ends.

Back Panel (make 1 panel):
You can make a plain white (or other solid colour) back panel or, alternatively, you could make the pillow reversible by making another SPOOKY or making a BOO panel.
If making a solid colour back panel:
Row 1: Ch 129, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch (128 sts)
Rows 2-72: Sc in each st across (128 sts).
Tie off.
Move on to assembly below!

Assembly:
Step 1: Line up the front and back panels with wrong sides facing each other. Use stitch markers about every 10 sts to keep the panels lined up. Insert your hook through both panels at any stitch and begin attaching the panels by single crocheting around the edge in black.
In each corner work the following: (sc, ch 1, sc) all into the same stitch. Place a stitch marker in the ch-1 space.
Step 2: If you are using a pillow insert, insert it when three of the sides have been joined and continue joining the last side. If you are using stuffing, begin stuffing when three sides have been joined and continue stuffing as you go.
Step 3: Join with a slst to the beginning stitch to close. Tie off and weave ends.
Step 4: To create the spiderweb border, start in the top right hand corner with the back of the pillow facing you, working along the top of the pillow (the top long edge).
For the long side: Join your yarn in the 9th st from the ch 1-space.
Row 1: Ch 3, sk 2, [*dc, ch 3, repeat from * two more times] all in the same st, sk 2, slst 4, ch 5, turn.
Row 2: *Dc, ch 5, repeat from * two more times, working on the main body of the pillow sk 2, slst 4, ch 7, turn.
Row 3: *Dc, ch 7, repeat from * two more times, working on the main body of the pillow sk 2, slst 2, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: *Work 9 sc into the ch-7 sp, sc, repeat from * two more times, work 9 sc into last ch-7 sp, slst into first st of previous row, working on main body of pillow slst 1.
Tie off. Rejoin yarn in the 8th st from the left of the previous spiderweb and repeat rows 1-5 until you’ve reached the end of the long edge for a total of 6 spiderwebs across the top. Check out my video tutorial on how to work the spiderweb border on the long side!
For the short side: Because we are working with fewer stitches, we need to make the spiderwebs slightly narrower. To do that, join yarn in the 7th st from the ch-1 space. Repeat rows 1-5 above for each spiderweb EXCEPT: in Row 1 only slst 3 (instead of slst 4) and in Row 2 only slst 2 (instead of slst 4). To start the next spiderweb on the short side, rejoin yarn in the 6th st from the left of the previous spiderweb and repeat for a total of 4 spiderwebs along the side.
Repeat the above for the other long and short side.

Step 5: Finish by adding mini spiderwebs to the corners to complete the border. Insert your hook into the first sc of the “sc, ch 1, sc” in each corner and work the following:
Row 1: Ch 3, [*dc, ch 3, repeat from * two more times] all in the ch-1 sp, slst to last sc.
Tie off. Weave ends.
