Keyhole Heart Free Crochet Pattern

Valentine’s Day is creeping up again! This Keyhole Heart is a unique pattern that can be used and decorated in so many ways! I personally love it as a decorative garland but imagine how cute this would be with a personalized charm hanging in the middle and hung as an ornament on a Valentine’s Day tree. I just love the unique and interesting look of this “hollow” crocheted piece.

If the Keyhole Heart look is not your style (cute, puffy hearts will always be a favourite!), check out my other heart patterns here, here and here.

Be sure to check out the video tutorial in this post for more details on how to crochet one of the panels for the Keyhole Heart (plus some assembly tips!).

The Details

As usual, this pattern is made in the same style as almost all my patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look. The Keyhole Heart has just 2 separate pieces.

The finished measurements are approximately 10cm/4″ from top to bottom.

Let’s get started! (Or Pin/Shop for later!)

In the next row, we will be crocheting only part way across the previous row before chaining and turning.

Row 4: Inc, sc 1 (3 sts). Leave remaining sts unworked.

Tie off. Do not turn your work. Reinsert your hook into the first st of row 3 (the one with the stitch marker) and repeat rows 4 and 5.

Tie off. Set aside for later.

Piece 2:

Piece 2 starts at the bottom centre of the heart and includes the left-hand side of the heart. We will then join piece 1 and piece 2 and finally finish by working the right-hand side of the heart.

Row 1: Ch 3, starting in second ch from hook, sc 2 (2 sts)

Row 2: Inc twice (4 sts)

Row 3: Inc, sc 2, inc (6 sts) Insert stitch marker into first st of this row.

Row 17: Sc 2 (2 sts)

Row 18: Sc 1, inc (3 sts)

Row 19: Inc, dec (3 sts)

In the next row we will crochet across Piece 2 and Piece 1 to join them.

Row 20: Dec, inc in last st of Piece 2, inc in first st of Piece 1, sc 1, dec (7 sts)

Row 21: Dec twice, sc 1, dec (4 sts)

Row 22: Dec twice (2 sts)

Tie off.

Piece 3:

Reinsert your hook into the first st of row 3 of Piece 2 (the stitch with the stitch marker). We will now work the right-hand side of the heart.

Repeat rows 4 to 22 of Piece 2.

Repeat all of the above for the second panel. For the second panel, be sure that your yarn tails are on the opposite side, so that the panels will line up perfectly with all the yarn tails on the inside for assembly.

Move on to final assembly below!

Assembly:

Step 1: Crochet Around Outside

Here are the pieces you should now have at this step.

Keyhole Heart

Place the two panels together, matching up all sides.

Starting at any point on the heart, begin attaching the panels together by single crocheting around the outside of the panels.

Be sure to crochet loosely around so that the edge keeps a nice curve!

At the pointed bottom, crochet [Sc, ch 1, sc] all into same st.

Crochet all the way around. Slst to beginning st and tie off.

Step 2: Crochet Around Inside of Heart and Stuff

Start at any point along the inside of the heart. Use the left over yarn tails to stuff the heart OR use a bulky yarn in a similar colour (such as Bernat Blanket) to stuff the heart as you crochet around OR use stuffing and a chopstick (or similar) to stuff the heart as you crochet around. If you are using fiberfill, be sure to stuff after every two or three stitches.

At the point at the top of the heart, crochet [Sc, ch 1, sc] all into same st.

Crochet all the way around, stuffing as you go. Slst to beginning st and tie off.

That’s it! Attach a loop so you can hang it as an ornament or make a few and crochet a long chain, attaching the hearts as you go to make a garland. I used some photo clips (from the dollar store!) to make a garland, which is a great, non-permanent way to use these pieces for decoration.
