Seamus Shamrock Free Crochet Pattern

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day next week, here is a fun little amigurumi shamrock* pattern to help celebrate.

*Seamus is not really a shamrock; he’s a four-leaf clover. But don’t tell him that! All he wants is to fulfil your St. Patrick’s Day crochet dreams and be the Irish-loving shamrock he knows he is deep down in his leafy, green heart.

Materials for Seamus Shamrock:

• Bernat Super Value in Lush (a cotton worsted weight would also work great);
• Fine or light weight pink yarn for cheeks;
• Embroidery/crochet thread or yarn in black for mouth;
• 3.5mm hook (I use THESE hooks!);
• Tapestry needle;
• Stuffing;
• 8mm safety eyes.

For this pattern you will make eight (8) “tips”. You will join two tips together to make one leaf and then repeat for each leaf. Then you will join all four leaves together.

Everything is worked in continuous rounds.

Terms and Stitches (US Terminology)

MR – Magic Ring

Slst – Slip stitch

Sc – Single crochet

Inc – Increase. Work 2 sc into the same stitch.

Dec – Decrease. Work 2 sc together. When working in the round, I always use the invisible decrease.

Tips (make 8 – I recommend you work in twos, as explained in the pattern below):

Rnd 1: MR with 9 sc (9 sts)

Rnd 2: [Sc 2, inc]. Repeat [ ] around (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc 2, inc]. Repeat [ ] around (16 sts)

Slst to next st and tie off the first tip. Repeat Rnds 1-3 for second tip. Do not tie off second tip. Continue to Rnd 4 below after completing Rnd 3 of second tip:

Rnd 4: Join the tips by sc 16 around the tip on your hook and then continuing to sc 16 around the first tip you made. (32 sts) Slst to beginning st (does not count as st in next rnd).

Rnd 5: [Sc 7, inc]. Repeat [ ] around (36 sts)

Rnd 6: [Sc 8, inc]. Repeat [ ] around (40 sts)

Rnd 7: [Sc 8, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (36 sts)

Rnd 8: [Sc 7, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (32 sts)

Rnd 9: [Sc 6, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (28 sts)

Rnd 10: Sc around. (28 sts)

Rnd 11: [Sc 5, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 12: [Sc 4, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (20 sts).

Slst to next st and tie off. Repeat rounds 1 to 12 three more times to make four leaves in total. Do not tie off after the fourth leaf, continue to Rnd 13 below:

Rnd 13: Sc 7 on the fourth leaf on your hook. Join next leaf by flattening the leaf and sc around the front half of the leaf (10 sc), join the next two leaves by sc 10 on each, then sc 3 of first leaf (40 sts total).

Rnd 14: [Sc 6, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (35 sts)

Rnd 15: [Sc 3, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (28 sts)

Rnd 16: [Sc 2, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (21 sts)

Rnd 17: [Sc, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (14 sts)

Rnd 18: Dec around (7 sts).

Tie off, leaving a tail for closing. Weave tail through the front loops of each stitch, then down through the opening and out the back of Seamus. Tug gently on tail to close. Place safety eyes, mouth and cheeks.

For the cheeks, I simply sewed some light weight pink yarn around one stitch underneath each eye. If you prefer round cheeks: MR 5 sc, join and tie off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew beneath and to the side of each eye.

Repeat rounds 13 to 18 for the back. Start stuffing after round 14. Continue stuffing a little after each round. Once you’ve closed the opening, poke the remaining tail back into the piece using the back of your tapestry needle.

Stem:

Rnd 1: MR 5 sc (5 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (10 sts)

Rnds 3-5: Sc around. (10 sts)

Stuff. Continue stuffing a little after each round.

Rnd 6: [Sc 3, dec]. Repeat [ ] around  (8 sts)

Rnds 7-8: Sc around (8 sts)

Rnd 9: [Sc 2, dec]. Repeat [ ] around (6 sts)

Rnds 10-15: Sc around (6 sts)

Slst to next st and tie off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew the stem between two leaves.

If you use a light or fine weight yarn for Seamus and a 2.25mm hook, it will be even smaller and would make a great keychain! Add a loop to the top of Seamus and attach the keychain ring to make a sweet bag charm, or simply attach the jump ring right through one of the stitches.
