Parasaurolophus Free Crochet Pattern

It was about this time last year that I last added to my dinosaur pattern collection! Since it’s ben a whole year, it’s clearly time to add another! Check out my other dinosaur patterns here: Brian the Brachiosaurus, Stan the Steggy, Timothee the T-Rex, and Trish the Triceratops. I’m very excited to introduce Phoebe the Parasaurolophus to the gang!

The Details

This pattern is primarily made in the same style as my Ragdoll patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look.

The finished measurements are approximately 18cm/7″ from top to bottom. If you would like your dino to be slightly bigger, feel free to use a heavier weight yarn or double up your worsted weight yarn. You will need to increase your hook size as well!

Notes:

  1. The body panels and the hind leg panels are worked from the bottom up in flat rows. The arm is worked in continuous rounds from the bottom up.
  2. Each body panel is made up of separate pieces that are joined as you go.
  3. The face is added to the front panel before assembly.
  4. The horn cover is worked in two separate pieces from the bottom up and joined as you go.
  5. The stripes are worked along a foundation chain.
  6. The two body panels are placed on top of each other and then single crocheted together around the edges to join them and then stuffed. The horn cover and the stripes are placed on top of the front panels and crocheted onto the front panel during the joining process as well.
  7. The hind leg panels are single crocheted together to join them and then stuffed and attached to the body. The arm is attached to the body last.

Move on to assembly below!

Parasaurolophus

Assembly:

  1. Insert a 10mm safety eye into the front body panel between rows 8-9 of the head approximately 6 sts from the left.
  2. Using black crochet thread or yarn, stitch a mouth onto the front body panel at row 5 of the head approximately 3 sts from the right.
  3. Place both body panels together, matching up all rows and with the front facing you. Starting at the tip of the tail, begin attaching the panels together by inserting your hook through both panels and single crocheting around the outside edge of the panels in MC. Work the following into each of the bottom corners of the leg: (Sc, ch 1, sc) all in the same st. Crochet around the bottom and part way up the other side, stopping at the mouth.
  4. Place the Horn Cover Piece on top of the front panel (you will now have a layer of three panels; see images below). Switching to CC, insert your hook through all 3 panels as you crochet across the horn. Switch back to MC after the horn. Stop here and stuff the head. Note: You do not need to stitch down the bottom edge of the horn cover; when the head is stuffed, it will become taut. Feel free to stitch it down if you prefer, though.
  5. Continue crocheting down the left side of the head. Stop at the base of the neck. Top up stuffing. Place the stripes on the front panel so that it lines up along the curve of the dinosaur’s back, starting at the base of the neck. Just like you did in step 4 for the horn, switch to CC and crochet all 3 panels together to join them. Stop part way through to top up stuffing. Switch back to MC after the stripes. Finish stuffing. Join to beginning st with a slst. Tie off and weave ends. Stitch the tip of each stripe down.
  6. Stitch the hind leg in place behind the body, to the right of the foreleg. Weave ends.
  7. Stitch the arm to the front of the body. Weave ends.
