Hello, friends! I’m back with another sea creature crochet pattern! Check out my recent Squid Pattern if you missed it. Is there anything more adorable than a critter in a hat?! And a sailor’s hat, at that? Absolutely not, and I won’t be taking any feedback at this time. Let’s get into it!
The Details
As usual, the body of this pattern is made in the same style as my Ragdoll patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look.
The finished measurements are approximately 10cm/4″ tall and 16cm/6.5″ wide.
Notes:
- The body panels and belly panel are worked from the bottom up in flat rows.
- The leg panels are worked in flat rows across a starting chain (alternatively, you could work the legs in the round if you want).
- The belly panel is stitched onto the front body panel before assembly.
- The body panels are single crocheted together to join them and then stuffed.
- The leg panels are single crocheted together to join them and then stuffed. Once the legs are assembled, they are attached to the body.
- The claws are worked in continuous rounds from the bottom up and are attached after assembly of the body and legs.
- The hat is worked in two separate pieces (the brim in joined rounds and the body of the hat in continuous rounds) and then crocheted together.
- Ch 1 at the end of each row does not count as a stitch.

Second and Third Legs:
Insert hook in the stitch to the left of the just-completed leg and repeat rows 2 to 5. Set aside.
Note: I love the look of the legs worked in flat panels (and it’s less pieces to crochet overall than crocheting them in the round) but they can be fiddly to assemble, so, if you’d prefer, you can make 6 separate legs in the round (6 sts around and 5 rows tall) and join them together by flattening the tops and crocheting across 3 legs to close them (9 sts across – 3 sts per leg once they are flattened).
Claws (make 2):
Rnd 1: In red, work 6 sc into a MR (6 sts).
Rnd 2: *Sc 2, inc in next st, repeat from * one more time (8 sts)

Tie off.

Rnd 2: Inc in each st (12 sts)
Rnd 3: *Sc, inc in next st, repeat from * 5 more times (18 sts)

Rnd 6: *Sc 2, inc in next st, repeat from * five more times (24 sts)
Rnds 7-8: Sc in each st (24 sts)

Move on to assembly below!
Assembly:
- Place the belly panel on top of the front body panel, lining up the bottoms and the stitch markers on each side. Stitch across the top of the belly panel to attach it to the front body panel. Tie off and weave ends. The sides and bottom will be joined later during assembly.
- Insert 10mm safety eyes into the front body panel between rows 10-11 with approximately 7 or 8 sts between them.
- Using black crochet thread or yarn, stitch a mouth onto the front body panel between the eyes and spanning about 2 stitches. Stitch eyebrows over each eye.
- Place both body panels together, matching up all rows and with the front facing you. Starting near the top on the left side, begin attaching the panels together by inserting your hook through both panels and single crocheting around the outside edge of the panels in red. When you reach the belly patch, switch to coral yarn and insert hook through all three panels (belly and both body panels). Crochet down around the bottom and up the other side, switching back to red when needed. Stop and stuff. Continue crocheting up the other side, stuffing as you go. When only the top remains open, stuff firmly. Continue crocheting around and close with an invisible join. Weave ends.
- Place two leg panels together, matching up all rows and with the front facing you. Starting near the top on the left side, begin attaching the panels together by inserting your hook through both panels and single crocheting around the outside edge of the panels in red. Work the following into each of the top corners: (Sc, ch 1, sc) all in the same st. To create a nice curve around each leg, work the following into the top of each leg: (Sc 3) in the same st. Once you’ve crocheted around each leg, stop and lightly stuff each individual leg. Continue crocheting across the top. Close with an invisible join. Weave ends. Repeat for other set of legs. (Note: If you opted to do the legs in the round, you can skip this step.)
- Position the legs on each of the lower sides of the body such that the bottom stitching of the body is overlapping onto the legs slightly. Stitch into place using red. Weave ends.
- Position the claws above the legs on each side and stitch in place behind the stitching of the body.
- For the hat, insert the body of the hat inside the brim. Using a tapestry needle and white yarn, stitch the two pieces together to join them. Weave ends. Stitch hat to top of head.
