Banana Amigurumi Free Crochet Pattern

Recently, my niece requested that I make her a couple of crocheted bananas for her 11th birthday and I was absolutely all over it. She specifically asked for them to be peeled, which honestly made designing it so much more fun! Let’s get into it!

The Details

The finished measurements are approximately 25cm/10″ from top to bottom.

Notes:

  1. The main body of the peel is worked from the bottom up in continuous rounds.
  2. The four peel sections are worked in flat panels. Each section is made up of 2 panels (one yellow, one white), which are joined.
  3. The peel sections are attached to the body of the peel as you go.
  4. The outside(yellow) and inside (white) part of the main body of the peel is worked as one big tube and then the white part is pushed down into the yellow part.
  5. The banana itself is worked separately and is worked from the bottom up in continuous rounds and stuffed. The banana is removable from the peel.

Let’s get started! (Or Pin/Shop for later!)

    • Daffodil (approx 50g);
    • Winter White (approx 75g);
    • Black (very small amount).

  • Stuffing;
  • Tapestry needle.

Terms and Stitches:

Ch – Chain

Slst – Slip stitch

MR – Magic Ring

Sc – Single Crochet

Inc – Increase. Work a regular sc increase

Dec – Decrease. When working in the round, work an invisible decrease.

Sc3tog – Single crochet three stitches together

Invisible join – After last st, cut yarn and pull up on the working loop until the yarn tail is pulled all the way through. With tapestry needle, thread yarn tail through the next st from back to front and then down into the centre of the “V” of the last st worked. Pull tight. Weave ends.

Pattern

Peel Sections (make 8 panels – 4 white and 4 yellow):

Row 1: Ch 6, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 5 (5 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Sc in each st across (5 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Dec, sc 3 (4 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 4: Dec, sc 2 (3 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 5: Sc in each st across (3 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 6: Dec, sc 1 (2 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 7: Dec (1 st).

Tie off. Place a white panel on top of a yellow panel. With the white side facing you, crochet around 2 sides in yellow to join them. Switch to white and crochet 7 sts across the bottom (the side that will attach to the peel body). Tie off. Weave ends. Repeat until you have 4 peel sections.

Peel Body (make 1):

Rnd 1: In black, work 4sc into a MR (4 sts).

Rnd 2: In yellow, work 3sc into each st (12 sts).

Rnd 3: Sc in each st around (12 sts).

Rnd 4: *Sc 2, 3sc in next st, repeat from * three more times (20 sts).

Rnd 5: Sc in each st around (20 sts).

Rnd 6: *Sc 3, 3sc in next st, repeat from * three more times (28 sts).

Rnds 7-17: Sc in each st around (28 sts).

Rnd 18: In white, attach peel sections to peel body by inserting hook through both and sc 7 across each peel (28 sts).

Rnds 19-27: Sc in each st around (28 sts).

Rnd 28: *Sc 2, dec, repeat from * six more times (21 sts).

Rnd 29: *Sc 1, dec, repeat from * six more times (14 sts).

Rnd 30: Sc in each st around (14 sts).

Rnd 31: Dec around (7 sts).

Tie off. Weave end through each stitch and pull to close. Push white part down into the yellow body until smooth.

Note before closing: If you wanted to make this an even quicker project, you could stop here by inserting eyes into the white section of the peel body and stuffing it before closing (instead of pushing it down into the yellow part). You wouldn’t need to crochet a separate banana body; just depends on the look you’re going for! If you go with this option, the banana would not be removable from the peel.

Banana Body (make 1):

Rnd 1: In white, work 5 sc into a MR (5 sts).

Rnd 2: Inc in each st around (10 sts).

Rnd 3: Inc in each st around (20 sts).

Rnds 4-21: Sc in each st around (20 sts).

Insert 10mm safety eyes between rows 15-16 with approximately 4 sts between them.

Rnd 22: Dec around (10 sts)

Rnd 23: Dec around (5 sts).

Tie off. Weave end through each st and pull to close. Weave end. Stitch a mouth between the eyes and eyebrows over each eye using black crochet thread.

Insert banana into the peel. You’re done!
