I’ve been seeing a lot of vintage-themed Halloween decor in my feed this year and I just love that vintage spooky look! The more fun vintage-inspired Halloween crafts I saw, the more I wanted to try it out for myself but with crochet, of course!
I think she turned out so fun and the pattern does a pretty good job of capturing that spooky-cute vintage style (if I do say so myself!). This pattern is made using flat panels, just like my Ragdoll-style patterns. However, unlike all of my other Ragdoll amigurumi, this one has a gusset between the front and back panels. The gusset goes all the way around to make it a little more 3-D. That being said, if you don’t like the gusset or don’t want the extra work, you don’t need to use it! You can absolutely just join the front and back panels together directly, like my other Ragdoll-style patterns.
I did have a thought while assembling this pattern; you could easily make the gusset just a bit shorter and leave the panels open at the top, add a strap, and you’d have an adorable vintage-style pumpkin bag!
Please note that this is *not* a low-sew pattern. This pattern incorporates some felt pieces for the eyes and nose, so there is some sewing involved, as well as stitching for the mouth and cheeks.
The Details
This pattern is primarily made in the same style as my Ragdoll patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together. The finished measurements are approximately 17cm/6.5″ from top to bottom and 22cm/8.5″ across.
Notes:
- The body panels, stem, and gusset are worked flat from the bottom up.
- The cheeks are worked in the round.
- The mouth is worked in the round around a starting chain.
- The nose and eye patches are cut from felt.
- All of the facial features are stitched onto the front panel.
- The back panel is attached to the gusset first by placing one on top of the other and crocheting around the edges of the panels. The front panel is then attached to the gusset/back panel in the same way. The piece is then stuffed.
- Ch 1 at end of each row does not count as a stitch.

Move on to assembly below!

Assembly:
Step 1: In white, stitch the mouth onto the middle of the front panel from rows 6 to 9. Tie off on the wrong side of the panel.
Step 2: In black, stitch 5 vertical stitches on top of the mouth to create the teeth.
Step 3: Fold the top edge of each cheek inward and stitch in place. This creates a “fortune cookie” type shape.

Step 4: Stitch each cheek on either side of the mouth between rows 8 to 15. The indentation of each cheek should frame the curve of the mouth. Once you’ve stitched most of the way around each cheek, stuff lightly. Tie off on the wrong side of the panel.
Step 5: Cut a triangle from black felt. The triangle is equilateral, with each side measuring 2.5cm/1″. With a sewing needle and black sewing thread, stitch the nose onto the front panel between the cheeks at rows 14 to 16. Tie off on wrong side of panel.
Step 6: Cut two triangles from yellow felt. The triangles are isosceles triangles with the bottom measuring 3cm/1.25″ and the sides measuring 4.5cm/1.75″. Toward the top of each triangle, cut a small slit and insert a 12mm safety eye into each one. Use scissors to trim off the tip of the triangle above each eye. Insert the safety eyes into the front panel between rows 23 and 24, with approximately 14 sts between them. With a sewing needle and yellow sewing thread, stitch the triangles to the front panel. Tie off on wrong side of panel.

Step 7: With black, stitch three vertical lines above each eye. The middle stitch should span 5 rows and the side stitches should span 4 rows high and 2 stitches across. Tie off on wrong side of panel.
Step 8: With the right side (i.e. the side that will be facing out) of the back panel facing you, line the long edge of the gusset up with the edge of the back panel. Join orange yarn, insert your hook through both panels and single crochet around them to attach.
Note: The length of the gusset needed will depend on the size of your front and back panels. As you join the back panel and the gusset, you may need to adjust the number of gusset rows by either removing or adding some rows. If you need to add rows after you’ve tied off, don’t worry! Just join your yarn and add as many rows as you need. You can hide the extra yarn ends inside at the end. If you need to remove some rows, simply untie the knot from where you tied off and frog as many rows as you need. Tie off again.
Stitch together the short ends of the gusset where they meet. Tie off.
Step 9: Place the front panel on top of the gusset/back panel, being sure to line up the top middle of the front panel with the top middle of the back panel. With the right side of the front panel facing you, insert your hook through the front panel and the gusset and begin single crocheting around the edges to join them. When you’ve crocheted about 3/4 of the way around, stop and stuff. Stuff as evenly as possible.
Continue joining the front panel and the gusset, stuffing as you go. Once the piece is firmly stuffed, slst to beg st to close and tie off. Weave ends.
Step 10: Stitch the stem to the top. Weave ends.
