Hello, friends! How about one more spooky pattern before Halloween?! Not only is this one super cute, it’s a very quick project, so you still have lots of time to make one before October 31st. Can you believe this is the first bat I have ever crocheted? It was fun trying to figure out how to design those cute little wings!
I think the velvet yarn really adds something special to this pattern but you can work this pattern up in any yarn you prefer if you don’t have any velvet yarn (chenille or another fuzzy yarn would be a fantastic substitute!)

The Details
As usual, this pattern is made in the same style as my Ragdoll patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look. This project has a total of just 5 pieces with zero colour work, so it will work up fairly quickly!
The finished measurements are approximately 18cm/7″ tall and 23cm/9″ wide.

Materials:

- 3.25mm hook for main (I use THESE hooks!);
- 2.75mm hook for belly/face patch and wings;
- Bernat Velvet (bulky, category 5) in Blackbird (less than 50g);
- Bernat Baby Velvet (worsted, category 4) in Blissful Greige (less than 50g);
- Bernat Baby Velvet (worsted, category 4) in Pink Dusk (small amounts);
- 14mm Safety eyes;
- Black crochet thread, size 5;
- Small amount of red yarn or embroidery thread for mouth (optional);
- Stuffing;
- Tapestry needle.
Terms and Stitches:
Ch – Chain
MR – Magic Ring
Slst – Slip stitch
Surface slst – place yarn behind fabric, insert hook into crocheted fabric from the front to the back, yo and pull a loop through to the front, *insert hook into fabric next to the st just worked, yo, pull a loop through to the front and through the loop on hook, repeat from *.
Sc – Single Crochet
Inc – Increase. Work a regular sc increase
Dec – Decrease. Work a regular sc decrease
Hdc – Half double crochet
Dc – Double crochet
Pc – Picot. Chain 3, slst to first ch
Sk – Skip
Pattern
Body Panel (make 2):
Use a 3.25mm hook and bulky yarn.
Row 1: In black, ch 6, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch (5 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Inc, sc 3, inc (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Inc, sc 5, inc (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each st (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Inc, sc 7, inc (11 sts), ch 1, turn.
Rows 6-9: Sc in each st (11 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Dec, sc 7, dec (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 11: Sc in each st (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 12: Inc in each of the first two sts, sc 5, inc in each of the last two sts (13 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 13: Inc, sc 11, inc (15 sts), ch 1, turn.

Rows 24-26: Sc in each st (17 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 27: Sc 5, leave rem sts unworked (5 sts), ch 1, turn.

Row 29: Sc 1, dec (2 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 30: Dec (1 st).
Tie off. Turn panel so that the ear that you just worked is on the right.
Row 1: Sk 1 st on row 26, sc 1, hdc 1, dc 1, hdc 1, sc 1, leave rem sts unworked (5 sts).
Tie off. Turn panel to that the worked ear is now on the left. Rejoin yarn into first st of row 26. Repeat rows 27 to 30.
Face/Belly Patch (make 1):
Use 2.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn.
Row 1: In grey, ch 4, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch (3 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Inc, sc 1, inc (5 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Inc, sc 3, inc (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Rows 4-7: Sc in each st (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Dec, sc 3, dec (5 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Inc, sc 3, inc (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Inc in each of the first two sts, sc 3, inc in each of the last two sts (11 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 11: Inc, sc 9, inc (13 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 12: Inc, sc 11, inc (15 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 13: Sc in each st (15 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 14: Inc, sc 13, inc (17 sts), ch 1, turn.
Rows 15-16: Sc in each st (17 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 17: Dec, sc 13, dec (15 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 18: Dec, sc 5, leave rem sts unworked (6 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 19: Dec, sc 2, dec (4 sts).
Tie off. Do not turn. Join yarn in first st of row 17 and rep rows 18 to 19. Sc around the edge of the panel to finish. Slst to beginning st. Tie off. Weave ends.
Wing (make 2):
Use a 2.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn.
Row 1: In grey, ch 6, starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch (5 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc 4, inc (6 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each st (6 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc 5, inc (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc in each st (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc 6, inc (8 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc in each st (8 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc 7, inc (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Rows 9-10: Sc in each st (9 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 11: Dec, sc 7 (8 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 12: Sc 6, dec (7 sts), ch 1, turn.
Row 13: Dec twice, sc 3 (5 sts), ch 2, do not turn.
Working along the bottom edge of the wing:
Row 14: Pc, dc, hdc, sc 2, *[dc, pc, dc] in same st, hdc, sc 2, rep from * once more.
Tie off. Weave ends.
In black (bulky weight) yarn and 3.25mm, sc along the top and down the far side of each wing. For the left wing, you will start at the top edge. For the right wing, you will start at the bottom of the wing tip.
Surface slst two lines in black at each of the two points on each wing.
Move on to assembly below!
Assembly:
Step 1: Belly Patch and Face
Using grey, stitch the face/belly patch onto the front body panel so that the narrowest part of the patch lines up with the narrowest part of the front body panel.
Insert 14mm safety eyes onto the face/belly patch (and through the front panel) between rows 13 and 14 of the patch with about 7 or 8 sts between them.
Using red yarn or embroidery thread and a tapestry needle, stitch the mouth onto the patch at about row 12 over two stitches. Outline the red mouth with black crochet thread.
Using pink yarn, stitch triangle shapes in each ear.
Step 2: Body Panels
Place the two body panels together so that all edges line up perfectly. Ensure the front is facing you as you crochet around. Starting in a stitch on the left side of the head, underneath the ear, begin attaching the panels together by inserting your hook through both panels and single crocheting around the outside edge of the panels using a 3.25mm hook and main colour yarn. Crochet with a looser tension to create smooth curves.
At the bottom of the body, work a picot stitch on either side of the point of the body to create little feet.
Stop when you’ve crocheted halfway up the head. Stuff the body and head.
Continue crocheting up and around the ear. Work 3sc into the tip of each ear.
Continue topping up stuffing after every two or three stitches.
Continue crocheting around, topping up stuffing until your bat is firm. When satisfied with the stuffing, close with a slst to first st. Tie off. With your tapestry needle, poke the yarn tail back inside the piece.
Step 3: Wings
Stitch each wing on either side of the body. You may need to stitch back and forth two or three times to make them secure and be able to stand up on their own.
