Terrifying T-Rex Free Crochet Pattern

Hi, all! I’m back with another crochet pattern for you! The last couple of patterns have been fairly epic projects, and I think it’s nice to break up big, time-intensive projects with fun little ones in between that don’t take a lot of mental work and are quick! So, with that, I give you these Terrifying T-Rex buddies! They are so fun and quick to make that you could have a whole hoard of these cute little gals and guys in no time! Also, the colour combo possibilities are endless. They are made in the same style as our Ragdoll patterns i.e. separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look, except for the spikes which are worked in the round.

Let’s get started. Here’s what I used:

• 3.5mm hook (I use THESE hooks!);
• For the blue dino:
  • Bernat Handicrafter yarn (worsted weight) in Robin’s Egg;
  • Bernat Handicrafter yarn (worsted weight) in Pale Yellow;
  • Loops and Threads Colorwheel in Light Coral for bow;
• For the green dino:
  • Generic cotton yarn (worsted weight) in Green (I’m actually not sure what the brand is – I think I found it at my local dollar store and the label is long gone. Sorry about that! Any worsted weight will work great!)
  • Bernat handicrafter yarn (worsted weight) in Hot Pink;
• Embroidery/crochet thread or yarn in black;
• Safety eyes (optional)
• Stuffing;
• Tapestry needle.

These little guys have about 16 separate pieces each but because all the pieces are pretty small, they work up really quickly! The finished measurements are about 20 cm (8 inches) tall and 15 cm (6 inches) wide.

*Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row*

Body (make 2 panels):

Row 1: Ch 11, Sc along (1o sts)

Rows 2-5: Sc along (10 sts)

Row 6: Sc 4, inc, sc 5 (11 sts)

Row 7: Sc along (11 sts)

Row 8: Sc 5, inc, sc 5 (12 sts)

Row 9: Sc along (12 sts)

Row 10: Sc 2, inc, sc 9 (13 sts)

Rows 11-12: Sc along (13 sts)

Now we will start the head.

Row 13: Ch 15, sc 14 along chs and 13 along previous row (27 sts)

Rows 14-30: Sc along (27 sts)

Row 31: sc 4, dec, sc 15, dec, sc 4 (25 sts)

Row 32: Sc 8, dec, sc 5, dec, sc 8 (23 sts).

Tie off. Repeat for second panel. Put these aside for assembly later.

Spikes (make 7 or 8):

I did 7 spikes on the first one (the green dino) and then did 8 spikes on the blue dino to see which one I liked better and I couldn’t decide! So feel free to add as many or as few spikes as you like 🙂

Rnd 1: Magic Ring with 4 sc (4 sts)

Rnd 2: Sc, inc. Repeat around (6 sts)

Rnd 3: Sc 2, inc. Repeat around (8 sts)

Rnd 4: Sc around (8 sts)

Rnd 5: Sc 3, inc. Repeat around (10 sts)

Tie off. Repeat for remaining spikes. Set aside for assembly later.

Legs (make 4 panels but work in twos, as explained below):

Row 1: Ch 4, sc 3 (3 sts)

Rows 2-3: Sc along (3 sts)

Tie off first panel. Repeat rows 1-3 for second panel. Do not tie off second panel. Put both panels together, ch 1, and sc around the entire piece, starting in the top left corner. (Sc, ch, sc) in each corner. I didn’t stuff these! But feel free to stuff lightly if you wish. Slst to beginning st to close. Tie off. Repeat for second leg.

Arm (make 2 panels):

Row 1: Ch 4, sc along (3 sts)

Rows 2-5: Sc along (3 sts).

Tie off first panel. Repeat rows 1-5 for second panel. Do not tie off second panel. Put both panels together, ch 1, and sc around the entire piece, starting in the top left corner. (Sc, ch, sc) in each corner. I didn’t stuff the arm. But feel free to stuff lightly if you wish. Slst to beginning st to close. Tie off.

Optional Hair Bow (make 2 panels):

Row 1: Ch 9, sc along (8 sts)

Rows 2-5: Sc along (8 sts).

Tie off first panel. Do not tie off second panel. Place both panels together , ch 1 and attach by single crocheting around the outside, starting in the top left hand corner. (Sc, ch, sc) in each corner. After you’ve crocheted 3 sides, stuff lightly. Slst to beginning st to close. Tie off. Tightly wrap a length of yarn in the same colour around the centre of your bow about five or six times. Tie a knot on the back to secure, leaving long tails for sewing onto your T-Rex later.

Assembly:

Step 1: Face and Arm

The first thing we did was add the eyes and stitch on the mouth.

The eyes are located between rows 24 and 25 with about 3 stitches between them on the Green T-Rex and 5 stitches between the eyes on the Blue T-Rex.

For the green T-Rex, we used eyes in two different sizes (12mm and 8mm) to give him that hilarious look. We used 12mm for both eyes on the blue T-Rex. To make these more kid safe, feel free to embroider sleepy eyes (or any other kind!) like we did for our Unicorn, Spring Bunny and Mermaid Ragdolls:

We also added eyelashes to our blue T-Rex using black embroidery thread.

The mouth is located between rows 18-21.

Sew on the arm to the front panel between rows 12 and 13.

Step 2: Spikes and Legs

Cut off two lengths of yarn of the main body colour about 30 cms (12 inches) each. Put them aside for later.

Place the two body panels together, matching up all sides.

**Make sure the face of your T-Rex is facing you as you crochet around the outside of the piece.**

Starting on the snout of your T-Rex, begin attaching the panels together by chaining one and single crocheting around the outside of the piece. This could be on the left or right, depending on which side you plan to put the facial features on. For example, if your snout is facing right (like my green T-Rex) you will be crocheting up the snout toward the top of the head. If your dino’s snout is facing left (like my blue T-Rex), you will be crocheting down the snout towards the legs.  For clarity, I will divide the assembly instructions from here on, depending on which direction you’re going. Just skip to whichever section applies to you.

Snout facing right (Green T-Rex):

Crochet up the snout. Stop before you get to the corner. Pull up a long loop and leave this for now.

Now, with your tapestry needle and a length of yarn that you set aside earlier, place the spikes between the panels and attach them by sewing through all three pieces; the top panel, the spike, and the bottom panel.

Place your first spike about 15 stitches from the back of the head and sew in place. Continue sewing all the spikes one after the other across the head and down the back. When finished, tie a knot to secure and hide the tails between the panels of the body.

Now, picking up where you left off, continue single crocheting around the outside of the body. (Sc, ch, sc) in each corner. When you get to the spikes, simply sc in the stitches of the front panel only; since this portion is already sewn shut, it’s for aesthetics only. Once you are past the spikes, continue single crocheting both panels together as normal.

Stop when you reach the bottom of the back. Place the legs between the panels, slightly overlapping them to fit, and sew across both legs, the same way you did for the spikes. When finished, tie a knot to secure and hide the tails between the panels of the body. Continue crocheting around the outside. (Sc, ch, Sc) in the corner. Remember, when you get to the legs, you can simply sc in the stitches of the front panel only.

Stop before you get to the snout. Stuff. Continue crocheting around. Sc 2 (without ch space) in the inverted corner of the head and body. (Sc, ch, sc) in the corner of the snout. Top up stuffing as you go, if necessary. Close with a slst to first st. Tie off. With your tapestry needle, poke the yarn tail back inside the piece.

Snout facing left (Blue T-Rex):

Crochet down toward the legs. (Sc, ch, sc) in the corner of the snout and sc 2 (without ch space) in the inverted corner of the head and body. Stop before you reach the bottom corner. Now, with your tapestry needle and a length of yarn that you set aside earlier, place the legs between the panels, overlapping them slightly to fit, and attach them by sewing through all three pieces; the top panel, the legs, and the bottom panel. When finished, tie a knot to secure and hide the tails between the panels of the body.

Now, picking up where you left off, continue single crocheting around the outside of the body. (Sc, ch, sc) in each corner. When you get to the legs, simply sc in the stitches of the front panel only; since this portion is already sewn shut, it’s for aesthetics only. Once you are past the legs, continue single crocheting both panels together as normal.

Stop about 5 or 6 stitches up the back. Stuff lightly. You will want to stuff as much as is reasonable now because, once the spikes are sewn on, there won’t be a big opening left for stuffing.

Place your first spike and sew in place. Continue sewing all the spikes one after the other up the back and across the head. When finished, tie a knot to secure and hide the tails between the panels of the body.

Now, picking up where you left off, continue single crocheting around the outside of the body. Remember, when you get to the spikes, simply sc in the stitches of the front panel only.

Stop once you are past the spikes. Finish stuffing.

When stuffing is finished, continue crocheting around the outside. Close with a slst to first st. Tie off. With your tapestry needle, poke the yarn tail back inside the piece.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

Add a hair bow (or a bowtie?! Why didn’t I think of this before now?!) to your T-Rex and you’re done!
