Puppy Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Hi, all! Just popping in to show you what’s been on my hook lately. As you probably know, hats are not a common crochet project for me here on the blog (in fact, this is the first ever hat I’ve posted!), but a while back my 3 year old niece made a special request for a blue puppy dog hat. Blue is her very favourite colour so, of course, I couldn’t let her down! And, as much as some of us may deny it (me), summer is coming to an end and Autumn will be here in no time, so it’s the perfect time to start tucking into those Fall projects, including warm hats.

I also decided to make a blue kitty-ear hat for her as well for some variety. I figured some of you readers might also know a little one (or a few!) that would love a puppy or kitty hat (or for yourself?), so here’s how I did mine. These hats would look sweet in any colour!

Puppy Dog Hat

Here’s what I used:

• 9.00mm hook (I use THESE hooks!) for main;
• 3.5mm hook for ears and eye patch;
• 1.5mm hook for eyes;
• Bernat Super Value in Grey Ragg
• Bernat Super Value Yarn in Hot Blue
• Red Heart Super Saver in Black
• Bernat Handicrafter Crochet Thread in Black
• 4 white brads in two different sizes (two of each size) for eyes (Similar to THESE but the package I have is from Michaels and contains the two different sizes in the same package)

For the body of the puppy hat, I used a 9.00mm hook and the pattern for Repeat Crafter Me’s Chunky Bunny Hat, which you can find HERE (no need to reinvent the wheel here, am I right?). Since that pattern is made using chunky yarn, I doubled up the Bernat Super Value Grey Ragg and used two strands at once to make the hat. You could, of course, just use a chunky yarn, but I really liked the colour of the Grey Ragg so I used this method.

Once I had the body of the hat finished, I decided to add ear flaps (not to be confused with the ears of the puppy dog! I’m referring to the flaps that come down and cover little human ears). I did this by joining my yarn at any point on the last row of the hat and working the following rows:

Ear Flaps in Grey Ragg:

Ch 1 and turn at the end of each row.

Using 9.00mm hook and two strands of yarn.

Row 1: Sc 9 (9 sts)

Row 2: Dec, sc 5, dec (7 sts)

Row 3: Sc along (7 sts)

Row 4: Dec, sc 3, dec (5 sts)

Row 5: Sc along (5 sts)

Row 6: Dec, sc, dec (3 sts)

Row 7: Sc along (3 sts)

Row 8: Dec, sc (2 sts)

Row 9: Dec (1 st)

Tie off. Repeat rows 1-9 on the opposite side for the other flap.

When the second flap is complete, do not tie off. Instead, ch 1 and sc around the entire brim of the hat. Slst to first st to finish. Tie off and weave in end.

Puppy Ears (make 2) in Hot Blue:

Work in continuous rounds, using a 3.5mm hook and one strand of yarn (i.e. NOT doubled up)

Rnd 1: Sc 8 into a magic ring (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (16 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc], repeat [ ] around (32 sts)

Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc], repeat [ ] around (40 sts)

Rnds 6-10: Sc around (40 sts)

Rnd 11: [Sc 6, dec], repeat [ ] around (35 sts)

Rnds 12-13: Sc around (35 sts)

Rnd 14: [Sc 5, dec], repeat [ ] around (30 sts)

Rnds 15-16: Sc around (30 sts)

Rnd 17: [Sc 4, dec], repeat [ ] around (25 sts)

Rnds 18-23: Sc around (25 sts)

Rnd 24: [Sc 3, dec], repeat [ ] around (20 sts)

Rnds 25-30: Sc around (20 sts)

Rnd 31: [Sc 2, dec], repeat [ ] around (15 sts).

Tie off. Repeat rows 1-31 for second ear. Put these aside for assembly later.

Eye Patch (make 1) in Hot Blue:

Work in continuous rounds, using a 3.5mm hook and one strand.

Rnd 1: Sc 8 into magic ring (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (16 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc], repeat [ ] around (32 sts)

Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc], repeat [ ] around (40 sts)

Tie off. Put aside for assembly later.

Eyes (make 2) in Black crochet thread:

Work in continuous rounds, using a 1.5mm hook.

Rnd 1: Sc 8 into magic ring (8 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (16 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc], repeat [ ] around (32 sts)

Tie off. Repeat rows 1-4 for second eye.

Assembly

Insert two different sizes of brads into the black eyes; the bigger one in the centre and the smaller one above it and to the side. This is a super easy way to create kawaii-style eyes on your amigurumi or other crochet projects! And they are particularly great for hats because the prongs on the back get folded down so they lie perfectly flat on the back. No plastic or metal posts sticking out!

Sew one of the the black eyes onto the blue eye patch. Position it so it is off-centre. Then sew the other eye and the eye patch onto the front of your hat.

Next, stitch on a nose and mouth using black yarn.

Then, flatten the ears and sew them onto either side of the hat at round 3 or 4.

Finally, cut several lengths of Hot Blue and Grey Ragg yarn. Pull them through the stitch at the point of each ear flap. Tie a knot and braid them. Tie a knot to finish.

As a side note, I think adding eyebrows to the puppy face would make it extra adorable. I didn’t think of it at the time and it only occurred to me after I’d given it to my niece but I will probably add them if I make this hat again. Kitten Ears Hat

Here’s what I used:

• 6.00mm hook (I use THESE hooks!)
• Bernat Super Value in Aqua

For this hat, again, I doubled up the strands of the Bernat Super Value. To start, we will make the ribbed band.

Ribbed Band: 

Row 1: Ch 8, in second ch from hook, hdc along (6 sts)

Row 2: Hdc in first st, in BLO hdc in next 4 sts, hdc in last st (6 sts)

Rows 3-45: Repeat row 2.

Your finished band will be about 24 cm/9.5″ wide without stretching. If you need your hat to be bigger or smaller, simply add or subtract rows as necessary.

Hat Body:

Line up the short edges of the ribbed band, ch 1 and sl st the ends together. You now have a circle. Turn it inside out so the join is on the inside.

Working around the band:

Row 1: Ch 1, hdc 56 sts evenly around the band.

Rows 2-12: Hdc around (56 sts)

Slst to next st and tie off. Turn the hat inside-out and stitch the top opening together. Secure with a knot, weave in ends and turn right-side-out again.

If you made your hat bigger or smaller by adding or subtracting rows to the ribbed band, you will simply need to adjust the number of stitches around. For example, if your hat is slightly bigger, you may want to crochet 60 stitches around instead of 56.
