Melty the Ice Cream Cone Free Crochet Pattern

Hi, everyone! I’m currently working away on the next Ragdoll pattern and it’s coming soon! However, in the meantime, I’m popping into your feeds today with one more crocheted summer treat: ice cream cones! This is the second of two patterns that were previously only available on Ravelry (the first one was the Watermelon Pop pattern). It was written before this blog existed, so in an effort to have all my patterns available in one place, I am moving it here to the blog.

This is a really fun little project that you can whip up in an hour or two! As with the Watermelon Pop pattern, the “flavour” options for your Melty the Ice Cream Cone are endless! As you can see, I made what I like to call a Strawberry Sorbet ice cream cone and a Chocolate Banana cone! What flavour will you make? 😀

Let’s get started. Here’s what I used (less than 50g of each yarn!):

The pattern is worked in continuous rounds from top to bottom. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each row; move it up as you go along.

Start with tangerine coloured yarn.

Ice Cream:

Rnd 1: Sc 6 into magic loop (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (18 sts)

Rnd 4: [Sc 2, inc], repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 5: [Sc 3, inc], repeat [ ] around (30 sts)

Rnd 6: [Sc 4, inc], repeat [ ] around (36 sts)

Rnd 7: [Sc 5, inc], repeat [ ] around (42 sts)

Rnds 8-14: Sc around (42 sts)

Rnd 15: [Sc 5, dec], repeat around (36 sts)

Rnd 16: [Sc 4, dec], repeat around (30 sts)

Rnd 17: In FLO for entire row, 4 hdc in first st, skip 1 st, slst in next st, [sc in next st, 4 hdc in next st, skip 1 st, slst in next st], repeat [ ] around.

Tie off. Switch to Jute coloured yarn for the cone.

Rnd 18: In BLO of the previous round, sc around (30 sts)

Crochet in both loops for remaining rounds.

Rnds 19-21: Sc around (30 sts)

Pull up a loop for now.

Place the safety eyes, mouth and eyebrows as desired. I placed the eyes between rounds 12 and 13 with approximately 6 sts between them.

For reference, I placed each eyebrow starting in a st between rounds 9 and 10 going diagonally to a st between rounds 10 and 11. There are 6 sts between the top of each eyebrow and 9 sts between the bottom of each eyebrow.

I placed the mouth from rounds 13-15. However, feel free to wing it to give your Melty whatever unique expression you’d like!

If you would like Melty to have sprinkles on top, add them here by tying small pieces of various coloured yarn to the top. Hide tails inside.

Once all facial features are in place, begin stuffing Melty firmly. Continue to stuff after every few rounds.

Rnd 22: [Sc 8, dec] repeat [ ] around (27 sts)

Rnd 23: [Sc 7, dec], repeat [ ] around (24 sts)

Rnd 24: [Sc 6, dec], repeat [ ] around (21 sts)

Rnds 25-26: Sc around (21 sts)

Rnd 27: [Sc 5, dec], repeat [ ] around (18 sts)

Rnds 28-29: Sc around (18 sts)

Rnd 30: [Sc 4, dec], repeat [ ] around (15 sts)

Rnds 31-32: Sc around (15 sts)

Rnd 33: [Sc 3, dec], repeat [ ] around (12 sts)

Rnds 34-35: Sc around (12 sts)

Rnd 36: [Sc 2, dec], repeat [ ] around (9 sts)

Rnds 37-38: Sc around (9 sts)

Rnd 39: [Sc, dec], repeat [ ] around (6 sts)

Finish stuffing. Cut yarn and tie off, leaving a tail for closing. Weave the tail through each of the remaining 6 sts, ending with the tied off st. Pull the tail down into the cone and out the back. Pull tightly to close. Push tail back inside cone to hide using your tapestry needle.

Optional – Double Scoop

If you’d like a double scoop of ice cream, simply crochet another ice cream top in a colour of your choice, stopping at row 17. Add facial features if desired, stuff and sew onto the top of your Melty.

Whipped Cream in white:

Row 1: Ch 50, sc 3 into each st across (150 sts)

You should now have a long curl. Beginning at one end, turn the curl in the opposite direction than the natural curve, so that waves begin to form. Then loosely roll the waves into a spiral and sew onto the top of Melty.

Cherry in red:

Rnd 1: Sc 6 into a magic ring (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (12 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (18 sts)

Rnds 4-5: Sc around (18 sts)

Rnd 6: [Sc 4, dec], repeat [ ] around (15 sts)

Rnd 7: [Sc 3, dec], repeat [ ] around (12 sts)

Rnd 8: [Sc 2, dec], repeat [ ] around (9 sts)

Rnd 9: [Sc, dec], repeat [ ] around (6 sts)

Stuff cherry. Tie off, leaving a tail for closing. Weave the tail through each of the remaining 6 sts, ending with the tied-off st. Pull the tail down through the cherry and out through the top/back. Pull tail tightly to close. Poke tail back inside using your tapestry needle to hide. Nestle the cherry in the centre of the whipped cream and sew in place.

Chocolate Sauce in Warm Brown:

Rnd 1: Sc 4 into magic ring (4 sts)

Rnd 2: Inc around (8 sts)

Rnd 3: [Sc, inc], repeat [ ] around (12 sts)

Row 4: Ch 6, sc 5 along chains, slst to starting sc.

Row 5: Ch 11, hdc along chains, slst to next sc in round.

Row 6: Sc 2, ch 13, slst in first 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in last 3 sts, slst to next sc in round.

Row 7: Sc, ch 10, slst in first 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, hdc, dc in next 2 sts, slst to next sc in round.

Row 8: Sc, ch 11, sc along chs, slst to starting sc. Tie off, leaving a tail for sewing. Sew to the top of your ice cream.

Sew your chocolate sauce in place.

That’s it! Enjoy! I can’t wait to see all the flavours and toppings you come up with!
